HOW TO IMPROVE AT LOL FAST

Most players grind 10 games a day and barely move. High-elo players play half as much and improve twice as fast. The difference isn't talent — it's how they practice.

WHY GRINDING 10 GAMES A DAY DOESN'T WORK

Here's the uncomfortable truth: most of your ranked games teach you nothing. You queue up, autopilot through laning phase, teamfight on instinct, and either win or lose based on which team had fewer bad players. Then you do it again.

This is mindless grinding, and it's the #1 reason players stay hardstuck. You're repeating the same mistakes with slightly different contexts. After 500 games, your habits are more deeply ingrained — not improved.

The research on skill acquisition is clear: improvement comes from deliberate practice— focused effort on specific weaknesses with immediate feedback. This is how musicians, athletes, and chess players improve. League is no different.

The 80/20 rule: 80% of your improvement comes from fixing 20% of your habits. The trick is knowing which 20%. That's the hard part — and it's what separates mindless grinding from deliberate practice.

THE 80/20 PRACTICE METHOD

This is the framework. 5 games with focus beats 15 games on autopilot.

1

Identify Your #1 Problem

15 min

Before you even queue up, you need to know what you're working on. Watch your last loss — specifically, find the 2–3 moments that turned the game. Was it a bad trade in lane? A missed rotation? A fight you took without vision?

Pick ONE. The most impactful one. That's your focus for today's session. Write it on a sticky note. Put it on your monitor. Seriously.

2

Play 3 Focused Games

~90 min

Queue ranked. But this time, you're playing with a single focus. If your focus is “recall timing,” then every time you're about to back, pause and check: is this the right time? Is a cannon wave coming? Is dragon spawning?

You might lose LP from the distraction. That's fine. You're investing in long-term improvement. After 3 games of conscious focus, the habit starts becoming automatic.

Don't play more than 3 focused games in a row — mental fatigue kills deliberate practice
If you tilt, stop immediately. Tilted games teach nothing except bad habits
Track your focus metric: if it's CS, note your CS/min each game. If it's deaths, count them
3

Review Your Games

20 min

After your 3 games, watch at least one replay. Skip to the moments that mattered — deaths, lost objectives, fights that went wrong. Ask yourself: “Did I stick to my focus? What happened when I did? What happened when I forgot?”

Key insight: Self-review is good, but limited. You'll catch obvious mistakes but miss the subtle patterns that a higher-elo player would spot immediately. This is where coaching compounds the value of every practice session.

4

Update Your Focus Weekly

5 min

Every week, pick a new #1 focus. Don't move on until the previous habit feels automatic. The progression most Gold players benefit from:

Week 1: Recall timing — never back with a wave in the middle of lane
Week 2: Wave management — ask push or freeze before touching each wave
Week 3: Jungle tracking — check minimap every 3 CS
Week 4: Fight selection — run the 2-second checklist before committing
Week 5: Objective conversion — always take a tower/drake/baron after winning a fight

5 MISTAKES THAT KILL YOUR IMPROVEMENT

Playing on autopilot

If you aren't actively thinking about your focus, you're just grinding. Take a 5-second pause before each game to remind yourself what you're working on.

Trying to fix everything at once

Your brain can only consciously monitor 1-2 things. Pick one focus per session. Mastery of one habit beats awareness of five.

Never watching replays

You can't improve what you can't measure. Even 10 minutes of replay review after a session is 10x better than none.

Playing through tilt

After 2 losses in a row, your decision-making is compromised. Take a 15-minute break or stop for the day. Tilted games actively make you worse.

Champion pool too wide

Every champion you add to your pool steals mental bandwidth from improvement. Stick to 2-3 champions until you hit your target rank.

THE FASTEST PATH: FOCUSED PRACTICE + COACHING

Focused practice alone is powerful. But it has a ceiling: you can't fix habits you can't see. A coach identifies the 20% of habits that are costing you the most LP — often things you'd never notice on your own.

Mindless grinding (10+ games/day)
Minimal improvement. Habits deepen.
Focused practice only (3-5 games/day)
Steady improvement. Limited by self-awareness.
Focused practice + weekly VOD review
Fastest improvement. Coach finds your blind spots, you focus each week on the highest-impact fix.

The combination works because coaching solves the “what to focus on” problem. Instead of guessing which habit matters most, your coach tells you. Then you use focused practice to drill it until it's automatic. Next week, new focus. This cycle is how players jump 2+ divisions in a single split.

YOUR WEEKLY IMPROVEMENT ROUTINE

Monday
  • Watch last week's VOD review feedback
  • Pick this week's #1 focus based on coach's feedback
  • Play 3 focused ranked games
Tuesday–Thursday
  • Play 3-5 focused ranked games per session
  • Quick self-review after each session (10 min)
  • Track your focus metric (deaths, CS/min, etc.)
Friday
  • Pick your best close-loss replay from the week
  • Submit it for VOD review
  • Play 2-3 more focused games
Weekend
  • Play ranked with everything you've practiced this week
  • No new focus — just let the habits consolidate
  • Review your tracked metrics and note improvement

Total time: about 2 hours per day, 5 days a week. That's less than most hardstuck players grind — but every minute is productive. Quality over quantity wins every time.
